Understanding DPS Calculations
What Is DPS?
DPS stands for Damage Per Second — the average rate at which a weapon or ability deals damage to a target over a continuous engagement. It is the foundational metric of game balance and personal performance optimisation. A weapon with 1,000 base damage but a five-second attack cycle has the same DPS as a weapon with 200 base damage and a one-second cycle; they both output 200 DPS on average. DPS abstracts away the tempo of individual hits and gives you a single comparable number. In competitive gaming communities, DPS is used to evaluate weapons, character builds, item upgrades, and team compositions. The 'effective' variant of DPS folds in probability-based bonuses (crits, headshots) to give you the statistically expected output rather than the guaranteed floor — which is what you actually experience over a sustained fight.
How Is DPS Calculated?
Raw DPS is the simplest form: Base Damage × Hits Per Second. It assumes infinite ammo and no reload pauses — the theoretical ceiling with no crits. Burst DPS applies within a single magazine: total magazine damage divided by the time to empty it (magazine size ÷ fire rate). Because reload time isn't counted, Burst DPS equals Raw DPS when crits are ignored. Sustained DPS is the realistic average: magazine damage divided by the full cycle time (fire time + reload time). This is the DPS you can maintain indefinitely and is the most practically useful figure. Effective DPS builds on Sustained DPS by multiplying average-hit damage by the crit factor — Average Hit Damage = Base Damage × [1 + Crit Chance × (Crit Multiplier − 1)] — then applying that to the magazine and cycle. Headshot DPS adds a further layer: average hit damage is multiplied again by the headshot factor. Time-to-Kill is derived from shots-to-kill (ceiling of Target HP ÷ Average Hit Damage) and accounts for reload pauses between full magazines.
Why Does DPS Matter?
DPS matters because it directly answers the question 'how fast can I kill things?' — and in both PvE and PvP contexts, kill speed determines outcomes. In PvE content a higher DPS means faster clears, more loot per hour, and the ability to outpace enemy healing or damage-over-time effects. In PvP a higher DPS (specifically a lower TTK) means you eliminate opponents before they eliminate you, which is the most fundamental advantage in any shooter or fighting game. DPS also matters for team composition: in games where roles exist (tank, healer, DPS), the damage dealers need to output enough DPS to defeat enemies within a window the tank and healer can sustain. Limitations and Caveats
DPS is an average and assumes statistical convergence — your actual performance in any short engagement may deviate significantly from the calculated figure, especially when crit chance is low (high variance). The calculator assumes hits land; it does not model accuracy or miss chance by default. Weapon spread, damage falloff over distance, target movement, and player skill are not accounted for. Multi-hit abilities (e.g., shotgun pellets per shell, or AoE spells) should use the sum of all pellet/tick damage as the base damage value. For games with dynamic buffs, the calculator uses a static snapshot — it cannot model buffs that activate conditionally or decay over time. Elemental damage over time, poison ticks, and similar secondary effects are not included in the current version; for those, add the expected DoT DPS to your base damage before entering it. Always validate against in-game damage logs or parses when precision matters.

What is the difference between Raw DPS and Effective DPS?
Raw DPS is the theoretical output with no crits and infinite ammo: simply Base Damage × Hits per Second. Effective DPS is the realistic expected output — it folds in critical hit chance and multiplier (so crits land probabilistically), and accounts for reload downtime through the Sustained DPS formula. In most cases Effective DPS is lower than Raw DPS because reload pauses reduce your output, while crits partially recover it. If your crit multiplier is very high and crit chance is significant, Effective DPS can get close to or exceed Raw DPS. The bar chart makes the relationship between all five DPS figures immediately visible.
How do I enter fire rate — RPM or hits per second?
Use the toggle button next to the Fire Rate field to switch between RPM (Rounds Per Minute) and Hits/s (Hits per Second). When you toggle, the displayed value converts automatically — so if you enter 600 RPM and switch to Hits/s, the field shows 10. This is particularly useful for shooter games where stat cards list RPM (e.g., 750 RPM for many ARs) while the math internally uses hits per second. Either mode gives identical results; it's purely a convenience for the units your game uses.
What does the Crit DPS Gain % tell me?
Crit DPS Gain % shows how much of your current Effective DPS is attributable solely to critical hit stats, expressed as a percentage over what you'd deal with zero crits. For example, a result of 25% means your crit chance and multiplier together are boosting your DPS by a quarter. This is useful for gear decisions: if Crit DPS Gain is already high (say 40%+), adding more crit chance gives diminishing returns at low multipliers. Conversely if your gain is very low (under 5%), your crit stats are nearly irrelevant and you'd get more value from raw damage or fire rate improvements.
What does Reload Cost % mean and why should I care?
Reload Cost % is the percentage of Raw DPS you lose to reload downtime. If Raw DPS is 300 and Sustained DPS is 180, you're losing 40% of your output to reloads. This metric is particularly valuable in games where you can choose between a weapon with a smaller, faster-reloading magazine versus a larger, slower one. A large magazine with a long reload can have a lower Reload Cost % than a small magazine with a fast reload — it depends on the ratio. Use Reload Cost % alongside Crit DPS Gain % to determine whether your next upgrade should target reload speed, magazine size, fire rate, or crit stats.
How is Time-to-Kill (TTK) calculated?
TTK is calculated by first finding shots-to-kill: the ceiling of Target HP divided by average hit damage (which includes the crit factor). That number of shots is then distributed across full magazines and any remaining shots. Each full magazine takes one cycle time (fire duration + reload time) to expend, and any remaining shots take remaining shots ÷ fire rate seconds. The total of these is TTK. For weapons with no magazine (infinite ammo), TTK simplifies to shots-to-kill ÷ fire rate. Note that TTK assumes every shot hits — if you miss shots in practice, actual time-to-kill will be longer.
Can I use this calculator for games other than shooters?
Yes — the DPS calculator is fully game-agnostic. For ARPGs like Path of Exile or Diablo, enter attack speed as hits per second (e.g. 2.0 APS), your base damage per hit (or average of a damage range), and your crit chance and multiplier. Leave magazine size blank (treated as infinite ammo) since ARPG abilities don't reload. For MOBAs like League of Legends or Dota 2, enter attack speed and base attack damage, and set crit stats if your champion or item build includes them. For turn-based RPGs, set fire rate to 1 hit per round and adjust accordingly. The formulas are universal — any repeating attack cycle maps to this framework.
