Match-3 Game
How to Play Match-3
Choose Your Mode
Select Classic for relaxed endless play, Timed for a 60-second blitz challenge where matches add time back to the clock, or Moves for a strategic 30-move puzzle where every swap must count. Press Start Game to begin.
Swap Adjacent Gems
Click or tap a gem to select it (it will glow and scale up), then click or tap any adjacent gem (up, down, left, or right — not diagonal) to attempt a swap. The swap only succeeds if it creates a match of 3 or more gems. An invalid swap will briefly animate and snap back without consuming a move. On keyboard, use arrow keys to move the cursor and Enter or Space to select.
Watch for Cascades and Specials
After a valid match, matched gems disappear and remaining gems fall downward. New gems spawn from the top and the board is re-checked automatically. Chain reactions multiply your score — a 3-level cascade triples the points of that batch. Matching 4 in a row creates a Line Blast gem, 5 in a straight line creates a Color Bomb, and an L or T shaped 5-match creates a Bomb. Activate specials by swapping them with any adjacent gem.
Use Hints and Aim for High Scores
If you pause for 3 seconds, the game highlights a valid move in gold. Your high score per mode is saved in your browser automatically. In Timed mode, chain reactions add extra seconds to the clock. In Moves mode, plan carefully — you only have 30 swaps to maximize your score. Watch the level progress bar and aim to level up as often as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if there are no valid moves left?
When the game detects that no swap on the entire 8x8 board would create a match of 3 or more gems, it automatically triggers a full board shuffle. The entire grid is regenerated with a fresh random layout guaranteed to have at least one valid move. This shuffle happens instantly with a brief animation and your score is preserved — the game never gets permanently stuck. Dead board situations are rare in normal play because the cascade system constantly refreshes large portions of the board, but the detection and shuffle system ensures you always have a path forward.
How do I create and activate special tiles?
Special tiles are created automatically when you make a match larger than 3 tiles. Match exactly 4 gems in a row or column to create a Line Blast gem at the position where you made your swap — it shows a horizontal or vertical stripe. Match 5 gems in an L or T shape (5 tiles forming an L or T pattern) to create a Bomb gem showing a circle indicator. Match exactly 5 gems in a perfectly straight row or column to create a Color Bomb gem showing a star shape. To activate a special tile, simply swap it with any adjacent gem. Swapping two special tiles together produces a combined amplified effect for massive score potential.
How does the cascade scoring multiplier work?
Every time you make a successful swap, the cascade multiplier resets to 1x for the first batch of matches. If those matches cause tiles to fall and new matches form automatically (a cascade), the second batch of matches scores at 2x. A third automatic cascade scores at 3x, and so on — there is no cap on the multiplier. This means setting up a 4-level cascade makes the final batch worth 4 times as many points as a direct match. Cascade bonus points are the primary way to achieve very high scores in all three game modes, so planning moves that create chain reactions is the core skill of expert play.
What is the difference between the three game modes?
Classic mode is an endless puzzle with no time limit and no move cap — the game continues until you close it, and your goal is simply to accumulate as high a score as possible. Timed (Blitz) mode starts with a 60-second countdown; every match you make adds 2 seconds back to the timer, and every cascade chain adds 5 more seconds, so skilled players can keep the timer alive much longer than 60 seconds. Moves mode gives you exactly 30 swaps to maximize your score — once moves run out, the final cascade resolves and the game ends. High scores for each mode are stored separately in your browser so you can track your personal best in each format.
How does the hint system work?
If you pause for 3 seconds without making any move or selection, the game automatically scans the board for the first valid move it finds and highlights both gems involved with a pulsing gold glow. This hint shows you a move that is guaranteed to create at least one match of 3 or more — it is not necessarily the best move available, just the first valid one the engine finds. The hint disappears the instant you click, tap, or press any key. There is no penalty for using hints — they are always available and designed to help you when you are stuck. You can also use the Hint button keyboard shortcut or simply wait for the auto-hint to appear.
Is the game fair — are gem colors random?
Gem colors are randomly generated but with controlled weighted probabilities to ensure balanced gameplay. The six gem colors spawn with probabilities of approximately 20%, 20%, 20%, 20%, 15%, and 5% respectively — meaning the rarest purple gem appears less frequently, making color-bomb creation for that color slightly more valuable when it occurs. Additionally, the board generator guarantees no pre-existing matches of 3 or more when new tiles spawn: if a randomly chosen color would immediately create a match, the generator picks a different color. This ensures the board is always in a valid state without accidental pre-formed chains that would distort the cascade system.
